WHAT is the CIEL2006 COLLOQUIUM?

The CIEL Colloquium is a three-day international gathering, with lectures and informal discussions on subjects relating to the traditional liturgies of the Roman Catholic Church.

Previous Colloquia have been held in France, and the 10th Colloquium in the autumn of 2005 is to be held in Rome.

In the light of the historical diversity of Rite in Catholic England, the topic for the 11th Colloquium is
THE GENIUS OF THE ROMAN LITURGY: HISTORICAL DIVERSITY AND SPIRITUAL REACH.

The Colloquium will take place in the gracious presence of His Eminence Dario, Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos, who, as well as attending the conferences, has consented to be celebrant of the closing Mass on Saturday, 16th September.

Papers will be study the various Rites existing in Europe until the II Vatican Council reforms, and the spiritual influences of these liturgies. There will also be papers upon the place of music in the development and practice of the liturgies.

The papers are presented within the framework of the liturgical day, with a solemn sung Mass every day in the Rite of 1962, and the offices of Vespers and Compline. These will take place in the glorious 13th Century chapel of the College, and possibly in other historic Catholic churches in Oxford.

The Delegates and Speakers gather at various times for discussion and conviviality, particularly at luncheon and dinner, which are taken in common in the mediæval Hall of the College, and which are a good opportunity to make friends and continue the discussions of the day.

There will also be recreational time to allow delegates to visit Oxford.

WHO can attend?

The Colloquium is open to Clerics, Religious, and laymen and women who have an interest in liturgy. No specialist knowledge or involvement is needed, and delegates may participate at various levels.

Speakers are eminent in their fields, and are invited from several countries, as well as from England. It is hoped than many of the French founders of CIEL will also attend.

CIEL UK and the Colloquium is held under the patronage of His Eminence Alfons, Cardinal Stickler, and has the support and blessing of His Eminence Cormac, Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor, Archbishop of Westminster, and of His Grace the Archbishop of Birmingham, the Most Reverend Vincent Nichols.

WHY is it happening?

CIEL and the annual Colloquia exist to promote the study and appreciation of the traditional liturgies of the Catholic Church, in particular the Roman Liturgy of the western rite, known as the Tridentine Mass, or the Mass of St Pius V, in order to foster a greater love for a worthy understanding of the Holy Mass, the glorious common heritage of all Catholics.

The proceeding of the Colloquia are published in various languages, and distributed to Bishops, libraries and colleges. The faithful are encouraged to buy copies to give to priest and student friends. Copies of past Proceeding may be obtained from sales@ciel-uk.org.

WHERE is it held?

The Colloquium will take place in Merton College, Oxford. The college is in the centre of Oxford in Merton Street, just off the High Street, and is adjacent to Christ Church Meadow.

All delegates will be housed in the quadrangles of the College, in single room accommodation, most with private bathrooms.

Meals will be taken in Hall. Luncheon is an informal buffet, allowing day-delegates to join us, and dinner is served formally for resident delegates and a small number of additional guests. Common rooms and the beautiful college grounds are available to the Delegates for recreation.

WHEN does it take place?

The Colloquium will be held from the evening of Wednesday, 13th September, to lunchtime on Saturday, 16th September 2006.

HOW do I book?

Registration for the Colloquium will be available by application form during the spring and summer of 2006.

The customary publicity will be made through the Press, the CIEL UK website and the CIEL UK Chronicle, as well as through this website.

HOW MUCH does it cost?

The cost of the Colloquium to residential delegates will be £295 full board, including rooms in College, and the conference registration fees.

The cost to day delegates attending from outside will be £25 per day for conference registration, though a discount will be made available for those attending on all three days at £55 for the three days. In addition, some spaces for luncheon for day delegates are available at £15 per person, including wine.

CAN I contribute to the costs?

The costs of organising the Colloquium are considerable, and as we wish to keep the Registration Fees to Delegates (covering lodging, food, drink and conference fees) to a minimum, we would be very grateful to receive whatever contributions you feel you could make to defray cost of transport for speakers; publicity; printing; music; liturgy; security &c. as well as contributing to the Fund to assist those priests and seminarians who cannot afford the full Colloquium fees. Contributors giving over £500 (€750, or US$900) will be regarded as Patrons of the Colloquium, and named in a list in the Programme (unless they indicate that they prefer anonymity). Holy Mass will be offered at the Colloquium for their intentions.
